#16 Rejoice and be glad

Read Matthew 5:1-12

โ€œGod blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. Rejoice and be glad, for a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.โ€

Anyone who has tried to follow Jesus knows what itโ€™s like to be at least mocked, if not mistreated, for their newfound, Jesus-focused approach to life. Jesus is so sure this is the future for those who follow him that he not only prepares them for it but personally promises to reward all who continue to persevere!

However, in a culture that promotes personal well-being and happiness as the pinnacle experience of life, divine rewards can appear meagre in comparison. Alongside our natural desire for earthly rewards, we also have a never-ending desire for immediate and temporary satisfaction: โ€œI want it now!โ€ However, Jesus wants to open our eyes to the reality that Heaven rewards faithful followers of Jesus with delayed but eternal satisfaction. It is these greater rewards that Jesus says have the power to produce a truer and greater joy within us – even when we are in the midst of persecution for our faith.

Jesus is making it clear that the rewards we choose to pursue will determine the joy we experience in life. If we choose to pursue immediate and temporary earthly rewards we will receive immediate and temporary joy. If, however, we choose to pursue delayed and eternal heavenly rewards we will receive eternal, heavenly joy.

This brings us to the key, transformative point Jesus is making. While heavenโ€™s rewards are delayed, Jesusโ€™ firm promise that we will receive them is designed to transform our present earthly reality no matter how dire or unjust the circumstances. Even if you were to be mistreated, ridiculed or maligned for following Jesus, you can experience deep internal joy, knowing that deeply satisfying, eternal rewards await you in Heaven.

Have you been excluded for a new approach to finances, relationships or generosity? Be assured youโ€™ll be not only rewarded in heaven but surrounded by those who are welcoming you home! Have you been punished by institutions or authorities for pursuing an active living faith? Be assured that in heaven, all those who have suffered like Christ will share in Christโ€™s reward!

So, next time you think or pray, โ€œGod, where are you? Iโ€™m doing exactly what I think youโ€™ve asked me to do and Iโ€™ve wound up ridiculed/rejected? Whatโ€™s going on?!โ€ Allow Jesus to remind you that this is not unusual for his followers. Take the opportunity to exercise your choice to rejoice. Choose to rejoice in Jesusโ€™ promised heavenly rewards rather than complain about the lack of immediate, temporary rewards that can never truly satisfy!
